Map Charts for Geospatial Analysis

Visualize data on World, Country, or State maps. Use Map Charts (Choropleth) to shade regions based on metric performance.

Map Charts (Choropleth Maps) shade geographic regions-such as Countries, States, or Districts-based on a metric value. They are the intuitive standard for geographic analysis, allowing you to instantly spot regional trends, such as which state has the highest revenue or which country has the most active users.

Edilitics includes built-in, high-definition vector maps for the World and major countries, seamlessly integrated with your governed datasets via a point-and-click interface.

When to Use a Map Chart

Use CaseWhy This Chart Works
Sales Performance"Which states are meeting quota?" (Color by % Achievement).
Political/Census"Where is the population density highest?" (Color by Count).
Logistics"Which regions have the highest shipping costs?"
Risk Management"Which countries have the highest compliance risk?"

Chart Configuration in Edilitics

Inputs Required

Data TypeRequired CountDescription
Dimensions (Columns)1Region Name (e.g., "California", "India") matching the map standard.
Metrics (Rows)1Numerical value for the region's color intensity.

How to Configure a Map Chart

  1. Select "Map" from the Chart Library.
  2. Select Region: Choose the specific map scope from the dropdown:
    • World
    • India (States or Districts)
    • USA (States or Counties)
    • Europe, China, Australia, UAE, UK, etc.
  3. Assign Data:
    • Drag your location dimension to Location Name.
    • Drag your metric to Value.
  4. Name Matching:
    • Edilitics uses fuzzy matching to map your data (e.g., "Maha") to the map region ("Maharashtra").
  5. Visual Map (Color Scale):
    • Configure the gradient (e.g., Light Blue to Dark Blue) to represent low-to-high values.

Feature Highlights

Built-in Geometries

  • No need to upload Shapefiles or GeoJSON. We provide optimized vector maps for practically all standard business regions out of the box.

Visual Map Filter

  • The color legend is interactive. Users can slide the range handles to filter the map (e.g., "Show me only regions with > $1M Revenue").

Roam & Zoom

  • Enable "Roam" mode to allow users to zoom in on clusters of small states (like the US Northeast) and pan around the map for detail.

Data Labels

  • Smart labeling engine that shows region names only when they fit, preventing text clutter.

Best Practices for Map Charts

PracticeWhy It Matters
Use Standard NamesWhile we support fuzzy matching, clean data (ISO codes or official names) yields the best results.
Be Aware of Area BiasLarge regions (like Russia or Texas) draw the eye even if their value is low. Consider using Bubble Maps to mitigate this.
Choose Colors WiselyUse darker/hotter colors for "More" or "Bad/Urgent". Use gradients, not random colors.
Tooltips are CriticalAlways enable tooltips so users can hover to see the exact value for a specific state.

How Edilitics Is Different

Unlike costly GIS tools or complex API integrations, Edilitics offers vector-based data maps natively:

  • Zero Configuration: No external API keys (Google Maps/Mapbox) required - maps work out of the box.

  • Lightweight & Fast: Vector-based rendering ensures maps are lightweight, fast, and offline-capable.

  • Built-In Geometries: World, continent, and country maps are included with automatic region name matching.

  • Interactive Visual Map: The color legend is clickable - filter the map by dragging range handles.

You just bring the Region Name and Value.

Map Charts anchor your data to the real world. They answer the "Where?" question instantly, proving that location is often the most important context for business data.
