KPI Scorecards for Headline Metrics

Display top-level metrics clearly with KPI Scorecards. Show values, trends, and comparisons to track business health instantly.

KPI Scorecards (Key Performance Indicators) are the simplest yet most important visualization on any dashboard. They display a single, headline number-like Total Revenue or Active Users-often accompanied by a comparison indicator (e.g., "vs Last Month"). They answer the immediate question: "Are we winning or losing?"

Edilitics facilitates the creation of robust, theme-aware KPI cards that aggregate your governed datasets into single, definitive truth points.

When to Use a KPI Chart

Use CaseWhy This Chart Works
Executive SummaryPutting the "Big Numbers" right at the top of the dashboard.
Daily Tracking"Sales Today" vs "Sales Yesterday".
Health Check"Server Uptime %" or "Open Ticket Count".
Goal TrackingCurrent Value vs Target Value.

Data TypeRequired CountDescription
Dimensions (Columns)1Optional label key.
Metrics (Rows)1The main numerical value to display.

How to Configure a KPI

  1. Select "KPI" from the Chart Library.
  2. Assign Metrics:
    • Drag your primary metric to Main Value (e.g., Revenue (This Month)).
    • Drag your secondary metric to Comparison Value (e.g., Revenue (Last Month)).
  3. Formatting:
    • Title: Set a clear label (e.g., "Monthly Recurring Revenue").
    • Unit: Add prefix/suffix (e.g., $, %).
    • Precision: Control decimal places (e.g., 2 decimals for currency).
  4. Trend Indicator:
    • If a comparison value is provided, Edilitics automatically calculates the % Change.
    • Configure Good/Bad Logic: Does "Up" mean Good (Green) or Bad (Red)? (e.g., Revenue Up = Green; Cost Up = Red).

Feature Highlights

Smart Trend Calculation

  • Edilitics automatically calculates the delta between the Current and Previous value, displaying it as a green (positive) or red (negative) percentage.

Compact Design

  • Designed to be small but high-impact. Perfect for the top row of executive dashboards ("The Numbers Row"). make the KPI visually recognizable instantly.

Best Practices for KPI Charts

PracticeWhy It Matters
Context is KingA number alone ($5M) is meaningless without context. Always provide a comparison (vs Last Year, vs Target).
Less is MoreDon't clutter the card with too much text. Title + Value + Trend is the gold standard.
Semantic ColorsStick to Green for Good and Red for Bad. Don't use brand colors that confuse the sentiment.
Top Left PlacementIn Western reading order, place KPIs at the top-left of the dashboard as they are read first.

How Edilitics Is Different

Unlike hard-coded text boxes in most dashboards, Edilitics KPIs are live aggregations:

  • Filter-Responsive: If you filter the dashboard by "Region: East", the KPI recalculates instantly to show East Revenue.

  • Synchronized Data: Headline numbers are always synchronized with the detailed charts below, maintaining data integrity.

  • Governed Metrics: KPI values are derived from the same validated datasets used by all other visualizations.

  • Trend Calculation: Automatic delta and percentage change computation eliminates manual spreadsheet work.

This ensures your executive metrics are always trustworthy and up-to-date.

KPI Scorecards are the anchor of your data story. They set the context for deep-dive analysis and are often the only thing an executive needs to see to make a decision.
