Gauge Charts for Target Performance
Visualize progress towards a goal with Gauge Charts (Speedometer). Instantly show if a metric is in the safe, warning, or critical zone.
Gauge Charts (Speedometers) use the metaphor of a car dashboard to show exactly where a metric sits relative to a Min/Max range or a Target. They are visceral and intuitive, perfect for displaying percentage-based KPIs like Customer Satisfaction (CSAT), Quota Attainment, or Server Load.
Edilitics renders sleek, modern gauges using your governed datasets, moving beyond the cheesy "clipart" style of older BI tools to professional, data-driven indicators.
When to Use a Gauge Chart
| Use Case | Why This Chart Works |
|---|---|
| Quota Attainment | "We are at 85% of our monthly goal." |
| System Health | "CPU Usage is at 90% (Danger Zone)." |
| Score Tracking | NPS or CSAT Scores (0-100 scale). |
| Utilization | "Warehouse Capacity is 70% full." |
Chart Configuration in Edilitics
Inputs Required
| Data Type | Required Count | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions (Columns) | 0 | Not required. |
| Metrics (Rows) | 1 | Numerical value (usually percentage or 0-100) for the gauge needle. |
How to Configure a Gauge Chart
- Select "Gauge" from the Chart Library.
- Assign Data:
- Drag your metric to Value.
- Define Bounds:
- Set Min (e.g., 0) and Max (e.g., 100 or the Target Value).
- Axis Bands (Color Zones):
- Define colored ranges on the arc:
- 0-60%: Green (Safe)
- 60-85%: Yellow (Warning)
- 85-100%: Red (Critical)
- Define colored ranges on the arc:
- Style:
- Adjust the thickness of the axis ring.
- choose between a pointer needle or a progress bar style.
Feature Highlights
Multi-Color Bands
- Visually encode "Good", "Average", and "Poor" zones directly onto the axis, so users know the status without reading the number.
Progress Style
- Option for a "Round Progress Bar" look (no needle, just a filled ring) for a cleaner, more modern UI aesthetic.
Dynamic Title
- Display the exact value (e.g., "85%") prominently in the center of the gauge.
Animation
- Smooth needle animation on load or data change provides a polished, high-quality user experience.
Best Practices for Gauge Charts
| Practice | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Don't Overuse | Gauges take up a lot of space for a single number. Use them for the most critical 1-2 metrics only. |
| Set Realistic Max | If the goal is 100, set Max to 100. If Max is set to 1,000, 100 will look like failure. |
| Label Clearly | Ensure the user knows what the gauge represents (e.g., "% of Quota", NOT just "Sales"). |
| Consider Bullets | For dense dashboards, consider a Bullet Chart (Linear Gauge) instead to save space. |
How Edilitics Is Different
Unlike most dashboard tools that allow unrestricted plotting on raw datasets, Edilitics ensures:
-
Governed Data Sources: Every Gauge reads from validated, pre-cleansed datasets - no manual data entry that can lead to errors.
-
Vector-Based Rendering: Gauges scale perfectly to any resolution without pixelation, maintaining quality across devices.
-
Theme-Aware Design: Automatically adapts colors to your dashboard theme (Dark/Light mode) for a seamless visual experience.
-
Consistent Logic: Aggregation and threshold definitions are standardized, so every team sees the same "speedometer" reading.
This ensures your Gauge Charts reflect the true state of your business, not an inconsistent estimate.
Gauge Charts create urgency. They translate abstract numbers into physical position, triggering an instant emotional reaction to "high speed" or "empty tanks."
