Bubble Charts Guide

Add a third dimension (size) to your scatter plots with Bubble Charts. Visualize X, Y, and Volume simultaneously.

Bubble Charts extend the power of a scatter plot by adding a third dimension: Size. While a scatter plot shows the relationship between X and Y, a Bubble Chart allows you to visualize X, Y, and Z simultaneously (e.g., Spend vs Revenue, sized by Profit). This multi-variate view is powerful for spotting high-impact outliers.

Edilitics enables you to build these rich, 3-dimensional visualizations using a simple point-and-click interface, referencing your single source of governed truth.

When to Use a Bubble Chart

Use CaseWhy This Chart Works
ROI AnalysisX=Cost, Y=Returns, Size=Volume. Identify high-volume, high-ROI campaigns.
Market MappingX=Market Share, Y=Growth Rate, Size=Revenue. The classic "BCG Matrix" style analysis.
Risk AssessmentX=Probability, Y=Impact, Size=Cost of Validations.
Product PortfolioX=Price, Y=Rating, Size=Sales Count.

Chart Configuration in Edilitics

Inputs Required

Data TypeRequired CountDescription
Dimensions (Columns)1Categorical field to identify/group bubbles (Detail).
Metrics (Rows)3Three numerical values: X-Axis, Y-Axis, and Bubble Radius.

How to Configure a Bubble Chart

  1. Select "Bubble Chart" from the Chart Library.
  2. Assign Axes:
    • Map data to X-Axis and Y-Axis as you would a scatter plot.
  3. Assign Size:
    • Drag your third metric to the Size/Bubble Radius field.
  4. Refine Sizing:
    • Edilitics automatically scales bubbles, but you can adjust the Min/Max Radius in the Format tab to ensure small bubbles are visible and large ones don't obscure the chart.
  5. Color Coding:
    • Optionally, map a 4th dimension (Category) to Color for even richer density of information.

Feature Highlights

Smart Scaling

  • Edilitics maps the metric to the area of the circle (not the radius), which is the correct way to represent magnitude visually to the human eye.

Interactive Legend

  • If utilizing color categories, the legend becomes an interactive filter, allowing you to toggle specific groups on/off to declutter the view.

Detail Tooltips

  • Hovering reveals specific values for all three metrics (X, Y, Size), removing ambiguity about the bubble's exact dimensions.

Best Practices for Bubble Charts

PracticeWhy It Matters
Limit DensityUnlike scatter plots, bubble charts clutter quickly. Limit to 20-50 bubbles for clarity.
Positive Values OnlyCircle size cannot be negative. Ensure your "Size" metric is absolute or strictly positive.
TransparencyUse semi-transparent colors so that smaller bubbles hiding behind larger ones can still be seen.
Label Key GiantsUse data labels only for the top 5-10 bubbles to avoid text overlap.

How Edilitics Is Different

Unlike other tools that require complex mapping for size ratios, Edilitics automates bubble charts:

  • Area-Scaling Math: Bubble size is correctly mapped to area (not radius), ensuring accurate visual representation.

  • Governed Datasets: Your "Profit" metric in the bubble size matches the "Profit" in summary tables, creating consistency.

  • Interactive Legends: Toggle specific groups on/off to declutter the view without losing data.

  • Cross-Filtering: Click on any bubble to filter the entire dashboard to that entity for immediate analysis.

This ensures your multi-dimensional insights are accurate and actionable.

Bubble Charts are the ultimate "Big Picture" visualization. They pack three dimensions of insight into a single view, helping you spot the heavy hitters in your data instantly.
